Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions a family makes. It is a journey that shapes a child’s future, but the process of exploring options and enrolling can vary widely. From the type of school and geographic location to the resources available at home, many things influence these high-stakes decisions.
A recent study by the Avela Foundation sheds light on this complex process, helping us understand the shifting landscape of school choice and what truly matters most to parents today.
What Factors Are Most Important?
While every family has unique needs, the data shows that two priorities clearly rise above the rest: safety and performance. When parents were asked to rank their top decision factors, here is how they stacked up:
- School Safety
- Academic Performance
- Location
- Teacher Quality
- Extracurricular Activities
- Diversity
- Transportation
It is clear that before parents look at a school’s specialized programs or diverse community, they first need to know that their child will be safe and academically challenged.
How Families Are Influenced
The way families find information is a mix of the old-school and the modern. Word of mouth remains powerful, with 37% of parents relying on friends and family. However, online research has officially taken the lead at 38%.
While most parents are comfortable using online tools to navigate the enrollment process, the digital experience isn’t always smooth. Technology issues and unclear communication from schools remain significant barriers for many families.
The Impact of Location on Choice and Equity
One of the most striking findings of the Avela Foundation study is how much a family’s physical address dictates their educational destiny. About 63.6% of parents say that their location directly impacts their access to school options, but that feeling varies significantly by environment:
- Rural parents: 71.3% feel location limits their options.
- Urban parents: 68.2% feel location limits their options.
- Suburban parents: 57.9% feel location limits their options.
There is a fascinating tension in the data regarding equity. Even though many parents admit their own location limits them, a majority still believe that families in their community have equal access to school choice opportunities (69.6% in suburbs, 71.1% in urban areas, and 72.5% in rural areas).
This reveals a gap between the “theoretical” access families believe exists and the “practical” options they can actually reach. As we look to the future of education, bridging this gap between choice and actual access will be vital for ensuring every child finds the right fit.
The decision of where to enroll a child is rarely made in isolation, as parents are often guided by a blend of personal networks and professional data. Word-of-mouth remains the most powerful factor, with parents leaning heavily on the lived experiences of friends, family members, and neighbors. Beyond social circles, digital communities and online review platforms have become modern gatekeepers of school reputation. Educational consultants and current teachers also play a significant role by providing expert insights into a child’s specific learning needs. Ultimately, while institutional marketing and rankings provide a baseline, the final choice is most often swayed by the trusted voices within a parent’s immediate community.
