ARLINGTON, VA — Before the featured addresses and panel discussions at EdReform Virginia’s fourth annual school choice event, the atmosphere in the room was one of gratitude and shared community.
The program began with a heartfelt invocation from Steven Mosley, EdReform Virginia’s board chairman. After welcoming the crowd of more than 100, Mosley said it was a fitting moment to honor a longtime friend of the organization who was unable to attend.
“We want to take a couple of moments to first pray over the food that you just had and also pray for a friend of EdReform Virginia,” Mosley told the crowd. He referred to Julie Gunlock, the longtime WMAL radio host and committed school choice advocate who addressed the organization’s first two annual events. “In January she had a medical incident, so we want to pray for her and her recovery,” Mosley noted. (A GiveSendGo account has been established to assist the Gunlock family during her recovery process.)
A Heartfelt Tribute
During the invocation, Mosley referenced Gunlock’s health and her family’s needs.
“Dear Jesus, thank you so much for this day,” Mosley prayed. “God, we pray for our sister Julie Gunlock. Lord, we are so thankful for her and her voice here in the DC metro area and the friend she has been to us at EdReform Virginia… Lord, we pray for healing for her and for your head protection around her family.”
Mosley additionally offered thanks for the catering by local favorite Rocklands Barbeque, asking for a blessing on the meal and the fellowship of the day.
The Pledge of Allegiance
Following the invocation, the focus shifted to the younger generation of Virginians driving the organization’s mission. Mosley introduced two members of American Heritage Girls (AHG) Troop 0681, who took the stage and led the room in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The girls, dressed in their AHG uniforms, served as a visual reminder of the event’s core agenda: forging a better educational and civic future for all Virginians.
