ARLINGTON, VA — In addition to delivering a stirring address at EdReform Virginia’s fourth annual school choice event, former Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears was a featured exhibitor, meeting with attendees and signing copies of her memoir, How Sweet It Is: Defending the American Dream.

A Personal Story of Freedom

The line for the Lieutenant Governor’s table stretched across the room as families sought a moment to discuss her book — a narrative that resonates strongly with those in the educational freedom movement.

How Sweet It Is chronicles Earle-Sears’ journey from her youth in Jamaica to her rise as the first black woman elected to statewide office in Virginia. At its core, the story is a testament to the power of faith, hard work and — perhaps most importantly — the education that allowed her to achieve the American Dream.

Education Means Opportunity

The personal themes of her life were front and center during her speech earlier in the day. Addressing more than 100 attendees, Earle-Sears didn’t mince words regarding the need for greater educational freedom in Virginia.

Earle-Sears framed the current fight for school choice as a moral imperative to return power to those who care most about kids. “Education is the rung and we — parents — are the child’s first teachers,” she reminded the audience.
