As students across the Commonwealth and the nation return to classrooms this fall, the Trump Administration marked the new school year with a major event at the White House, highlighting a bold agenda of “educational freedom,” decentralized federal oversight, and expanded parental rights.
During a “Back-to-School” celebration on Monday, President Donald J. Trump and U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon addressed students, parents, and education advocates, touting sweeping changes aimed at returning power to state and local leaders.
“This school year marks a return to common sense in American education,” Secretary McMahon said during her remarks in the Rose Garden. “American parents and students have so much to be excited about, because the Trump Administration is steering education back to its rightful focus: serving students.”

Expanding School Choice and Reallocating Funds
A cornerstone of the administration’s education agenda is the newly implemented Education Freedom Tax Credit, created under the Working Families Tax Cuts. According to the White House, nearly 52 million students are eligible nationwide, with more than 30 states already participating or signaling intent to opt-in.
Additionally, the administration announced a historic $500 million investment in the Charter Schools Program to expand alternative high-quality educational options.
To fund these new priorities, the White House reported it has terminated over $2 billion in “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) spending. Those funds, according to Secretary McMahon, have been redirected toward evidence-based literacy instruction, credentialed school psychologists, charter schools, and workforce training. The administration also noted it has ended $67 million in grants that funded what it described as inappropriate ideological curricula and sexually explicit material.
Returning Power to States
Both President Trump and Secretary McMahon emphasized a hard pivot away from federal mandates. The Department of Education has issued the nation’s first “Returning Education to the States Waivers,” freeing up over $100 million from federal red tape for six initial states.
Furthermore, a record 25 states are currently exercising “Ed-Flex” authority, which allows local school districts to bypass certain federal regulations without prior approval from Washington.
“Key decisions that once sat with bureaucrats here in Washington, DC are moving to where they belong — in the hands of educators, parents, and local leaders who know each child best,” McMahon noted, characterizing the move as breaking the grip of the education monopoly in the nation’s capital.
Focus on Title IX and Parental Rights
The administration also took a firm stance on social issues and parental rights in schools. The White House underscored President Trump’s Executive Order barring biological boys from competing in girls’ sports and utilizing private female spaces, noting that it has launched dozens of Title IX investigations into institutions that do not comply.
Moreover, the Department of Education, in coordination with the Department of Justice, announced crackdowns on school districts that socially transition students without parental notification. The White House stated it has rescinded previous Title IX guidance regarding preferred pronouns and warned that schools sidelining parents risk losing federal funding.
“Never before have parental rights been enforced at this scale — and parents are back in the driver’s seat, where they belong,” McMahon said.
